The opening of Honeyland School’s new branch in Ibadan took an welcomed turn when six-year-old Primary 2 pupil, Talotoluwa Adeleye Adejumo, received a 12-year scholarship to study technology from the Managing Director and CEO of New Horizons Nigeria, Mr. Timothy Akano.
The scholarship was awarded during the school’s branch unveiling on September 7 at 1 Educational Avenue, Samonda, Ibadan, Oyo State.
Talotoluwa had earlier impressed guests at the event with a confident presentation of a poem in both Yoruba and English. Following his performance, the young pupil approached Mr. Akano and greeted him by prostrating, in keeping with the traditional Yoruba gesture of respect for an elder.
The simple act of respect caught Mr. Akano’s attention. Impressed by Talotoluwa’s confidence, discipline and appreciation of cultural values, he responded by offering the young student a 12-year scholarship to study technology.
The gesture turned a moment at a school opening into an opportunity that could shape Talotoluwa’s educational journey for years to come.
The scholarship reflects the growing importance of introducing children to technology from an early age. With digital skills becoming increasingly relevant across education, business and the workplace, early exposure can give young learners the opportunity to explore areas such as coding, artificial intelligence, robotics, software development and digital literacy as they grow.
More importantly, technology education can help children develop creativity, logical thinking and problem-solving skills while allowing them to discover their interests over time.
The moment also highlighted the importance of combining technological development with cultural values. Talotoluwa’s presentation demonstrated confidence in a modern educational setting, while his traditional greeting showed that preparing children for the future does not have to come at the expense of their cultural identity.
The scholarship comes as Honeyland School and New Horizons Nigeria deepen their partnership to provide ICT and technology education to Honeyland students. New Horizons Nigeria, a franchise of New Horizons International, is supporting the school’s efforts to expose students to technology alongside their conventional education.
Honeyland School’s new Ibadan branch adds to its existing seven branches across Lagos and represents another step in the institution’s expansion of its educational vision.
For both Honeyland and New Horizons, the focus extends beyond educating children for the present. It is about investing in the next generation and giving young people the skills and opportunities they will need to participate in an increasingly technology-driven world.
For Talotoluwa, that investment has already begun.
What started with a poem and a traditional gesture of respect has now opened the door to 12 years of technology education — a reminder that sometimes, a small moment can create an opportunity with lifelong possibilities.
