FAANG/MAANG is an acronym for five of the most influential technology companies in the world, namely Facebook (Meta), Apple, Amazon, Netflix, and Google. The term was coined by Jim Cramer in 2013 to describe what were then—and still remain—some of the most dominant tech companies globally.

First:
Focus on becoming directly tied to business value. Engineers who maintain or build systems that clearly impact revenue, cost savings, or critical infrastructure are generally safer than those working on experimental, low-impact, or redundant projects. This does not mean chasing flashy work, but rather understanding how your contributions affect the company’s bottom line and ensuring that impact is visible.
Second:

Maintain an external safety net. Keep your CV updated regularly, maintain an active LinkedIn presence, and occasionally participate in interviews even when you are not actively seeking a new role. This helps you stay aware of your market value and reduces panic if a layoff occurs. Financially, having several months of emergency savings ensures that a layoff becomes a transition rather than a crisis.
Finally:
Learn to read organizational signals. Layoffs are often preceded by hiring freezes, project cancellations, leadership reshuffles, or increased emphasis on “efficiency” and “restructuring.” When these appear, it is wise to shift into preparation mode: lighten financial planning, increase output visibility, and quietly strengthen your job search readiness.
